Adding two numbers of minutes is easy. Adding "2 hours 45 minutes" to "1 hour 30 minutes" is trickier — because the minutes overflow into hours. Time-duration math is just a base-60 (and base-24) version of regular arithmetic. Once you see the pattern, it stops being mysterious.

The rules in one line

60 seconds carry into 1 minute. 60 minutes carry into 1 hour. 24 hours carry into 1 day. Every operation follows the same logic you learned with base 10 — just with different place values.

Adding two durations

Add 2h 45m + 1h 30m.

  1. Minutes: 45 + 30 = 75. Since 75 ≥ 60, subtract 60 and carry 1 hour. Minutes = 15, carry 1.
  2. Hours: 2 + 1 + 1 (carry) = 4.
  3. Total: 4h 15m.

If seconds are involved, start there — same pattern. 1h 15m 40s + 2h 30m 50s: seconds = 90 → 30s, carry 1 minute. Minutes = 15 + 30 + 1 = 46. Hours = 1 + 2 = 3. Total: 3h 46m 30s.

Subtracting one duration from another

Subtract 1h 30m from 3h 15m.

  1. Minutes: 15 − 30 = negative. Borrow 1 hour = 60 minutes. Minutes = (15 + 60) − 30 = 45.
  2. Hours: (3 − 1) − 1 = 1.
  3. Total: 1h 45m.

Multiplying by a count

Need to know the total time for 7 workouts of 1h 15m each?

  1. Minutes: 15 × 7 = 105. Convert: 105 ÷ 60 = 1 hour, remainder 45. Minutes = 45, carry 1.
  2. Hours: (1 × 7) + 1 = 8.
  3. Total: 8h 45m.

Dividing a duration

Need to split 5h 30m across 3 equal sessions?

  1. Convert to total minutes: 5 × 60 + 30 = 330 minutes.
  2. Divide: 330 ÷ 3 = 110 minutes.
  3. Convert back: 110 ÷ 60 = 1, remainder 50. Answer: 1h 50m each.

Converting durations to decimal

Many applications (payroll, analytics) use decimal hours. 2h 45m as decimal:

  • 2 + (45 ÷ 60) = 2 + 0.75 = 2.75 hours.

And back: 3.25 hours = 3h + 0.25 × 60 min = 3h 15m. Once you memorize the common fractions (0.25, 0.5, 0.75), most conversions happen in your head.

Practical scenarios

Cooking timing: Roast 1h 30m, rest 20m, sides need 45m active time starting 30m before serving. When do you start each task? Working backward from dinner at 7:00 PM:

  • Sides start: 6:30 PM
  • Rest ends: 7:00 PM, rest starts: 6:40 PM
  • Roast ends: 6:40 PM, roast starts: 5:10 PM
  • Oven on: 5:00 PM (preheat 10 min)

Project estimates: Task A = 3h 20m, Task B = 2h 45m, Task C = 1h 55m. Total: 8h — just barely a full workday.

Music production: Combining 3 tracks of 2m 15s, 3m 40s, and 2m 50s yields a single run of 8m 45s. DAWs handle this automatically, but manual planning is still useful for setlists.

Fitness tracking: A week of 45m cardio + 30m strength, 6 days = 4h 30m + 3h 0m = 7h 30m.

Travel and logistics: 5h 30m flight + 1h 45m layover + 3h 15m flight = 10h 30m total. Add airport time and time zone changes for door-to-door estimates.

Common mistakes

Forgetting to carry. Most errors come from adding minutes over 60 without converting. Always verify sums of minutes or seconds are under their base before stopping.

Mixing units. "2.5 hours + 30 minutes" should become either "2.5 + 0.5 = 3 hours" or "2h 30m + 30m = 3h 0m." Don't add a decimal hour to a minute without converting.

Treating time like base 10. 1h 30m + 1h 30m is not 2h 60m. Carry: 2h 60m = 3h 0m.

When to use decimal vs HH:MM:SS

Decimal is best for: calculations, rate × time formulas, payroll, data analysis, cost projections.

HH:MM:SS is best for: schedules, cooking, music, anything a human will read without a calculator.
