Test Score Calculator
Convert the number of correct answers on a test into a percentage and U.S. letter grade.
What is Test Score Calculator?
The test score calculator converts the number you got right out of the total into a percentage and the corresponding U.S. letter grade, using the standard 10-point scale (90+ = A, 80+ = B, 70+ = C, 60+ = D).
Formula
Percentage = (correct ÷ total) × 100
Letter grade from the standard U.S. 10-point scale with +/− cutoffs at 3-point intervals:
- A+ 97+, A 93+, A− 90+
- B+ 87+, B 83+, B− 80+
- C+ 77+, C 73+, C− 70+
- D+ 67+, D 63+, D− 60+
- F below 60
Worked example
You got 42 correct out of 50:
- Percentage = 42 / 50 × 100 = 84%
- Letter = B (83–86 range)
- GPA = 3.0
How to use this calculator
- Enter the number of questions you got right.
- Enter the total number of questions on the test.
- Get your percentage, letter grade, and GPA-points equivalent instantly.
If your test uses partial credit or weighted questions, use the calculator for each section separately then average the percentages — or use the GPA calculator treating each section as a credit-weighted course.
Frequently asked questions
What grading scale does this use?
The standard U.S. public-school 10-point scale with +/− letter grades. Some schools use a stricter 7-point scale (A = 93+, B = 85+, etc.) or skip +/− grades entirely. Check your syllabus.
How do I handle partial credit?
Add your total earned points (including partial credit) as the "correct" input, and the total possible points as the "total" input. For example, 85 out of 100 earned points = 85%.
What is a passing grade?
At most U.S. schools, 60% (D−) is the minimum passing grade, though many courses require a C (73%) or better to count toward a major. Graduate programs typically require a B (80% or 3.0 GPA) to pass a course.
Is a 70% a C or D?
On the standard 10-point scale, 70% is a C−. On the 7-point scale used at some schools, it is a D. Always confirm with your course syllabus.
