What is Tip Calculator?

In the United States, tipping is a core part of compensation for servers, bartenders, delivery drivers, and many other service workers — federal tipped-minimum-wage rules assume tips will make up the difference. This tip calculator helps you leave a fair tip and split the bill without doing mental math at the table.

Common U.S. tipping ranges: 15–20% for sit-down restaurants, 18–22% for higher-end dining, $1–$2 per drink at a bar (or 15–20% of the tab), 15–20% for delivery drivers, and 15–20% for a taxi or rideshare if the app does not prompt you.

Formula

Tip = bill × tip percentage ÷ 100
Total = bill + tip
Per person = total ÷ number of people

Note: most Americans tip on the pre-tax subtotal, but tipping on the after-tax total is also common and always appreciated.

Worked example

A $50 bill with an 18% tip, split between 2 people:

  • Tip = $50 × 0.18 = $9.00
  • Total = $59.00
  • Per person = $29.50

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the bill amount.
  2. Enter the tip percentage — the calculator defaults to 18%, a solid mid-range tip for restaurant service.
  3. Enter the number of people splitting the bill. Set it to 1 to see just your own total.

Frequently asked questions

What is a standard tip in U.S. restaurants?

15% has traditionally been the baseline for acceptable sit-down service. 18–20% is now widely considered standard; 22–25% is generous and appropriate for excellent service or large parties. Many restaurants automatically add an 18–20% gratuity for parties of six or more.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or after-tax amount?

Either is socially acceptable. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is traditional and slightly more favorable to you; tipping on the after-tax total is simpler and more generous. Use whichever you prefer consistently.

How much should I tip a delivery driver?

15–20% of the order total, with a minimum of $3–$5 for small orders. Tip more for bad weather, long distances, or large orders. Note that delivery fees charged by the restaurant or app typically do not go to the driver.

Is it rude not to tip in the U.S.?

Yes, in most situations. Tipped workers in the U.S. often earn a subminimum cash wage (as low as $2.13/hour federally) and rely on tips for the bulk of their income. Not tipping should be reserved for genuinely bad service — and even then, leaving a small tip and speaking with a manager is kinder than stiffing the server.
