Velocity Calculator
Calculate velocity, distance, or time using v = d/t. Convert between m/s, km/h, mph, and knots.
What is Velocity Calculator?
The velocity calculator uses the basic motion formula v = d/t: velocity equals distance divided by time.
Formula
v = d / t. The result depends on units chosen, with conversions to m/s, km/h, mph, and knots.
Worked example
100 meters in 10 seconds = 10 m/s = 36 km/h = 22.4 mph.
How to use this calculator
- Enter distance and time with units.
- Velocity is shown in 4 common units.
Frequently asked questions
Velocity vs speed?
Velocity is a vector (has direction). Speed is a scalar (magnitude only). 60 mph north is velocity; 60 mph is speed. Casually, often interchangeable.
Average velocity vs instantaneous?
This calculator gives average velocity over the trip. Instantaneous velocity (at a moment) requires calculus or measuring a very short interval.
What about acceleration?
Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity. v = u + at relates initial velocity, time, acceleration, and final velocity.
Where is this used?
Physics homework, sports analysis (sprint times to speeds), aviation, and navigation. Foundation for kinematics.
