What is Layover / Connection Time Calculator?
The layover time calculator tells you whether your scheduled connection is realistic. Airlines book legal minimum connections, but legal isn't always practical when you have to change terminals or clear customs.
Formula
Min connection = base (45 min domestic, 90 min international) + 20 min for terminal change + 30 min for bag recheck.
Worked example
International arrival, terminal change, no bag recheck: 90 + 20 = 110 minutes minimum. A 90-minute booking would be too tight.

Frequently asked questions
What is "minimum legal connection"?
Each airport has an official minimum connection time the airlines use for booking. Often 30–45 min domestic, 60–90 min international. These are bare-minimum if everything goes right.
What if I miss my connection?
If the airline booked it that tight, they re-route you on the next flight at no charge. If you booked separate tickets across airlines and miss it, you may be on your own.
Should I always pick the longest layover?
No — too long wastes time. Aim for 1.5× the minimum connection. Comfortable but not bored.
What about international airports with U.S. preclearance (Toronto, Dublin)?
You clear U.S. customs before boarding the second flight, treating arrivals as domestic. Adds time abroad but eliminates customs at U.S. arrival.
