Cycling Speed Calculator
Calculate average cycling speed and finish time from distance and ride time. Or find finish time given target average speed.
What is Cycling Speed Calculator?
The cycling speed calculator converts ride distance and time into average mph and kph. Useful for tracking ride performance, comparing routes, and planning longer rides.
Formula
Speed = distance / time. Convert mph ↔ kph by multiplying by 1.6093 (mph → kph) or 0.6214 (kph → mph).
Worked example
25 miles in 1h 30m: speed = 25 / 1.5 = 16.67 mph (26.82 kph).
How to use this calculator
- Enter distance and unit.
- Enter total ride time.
Frequently asked questions
What's a good cycling speed?
Casual: 10-12 mph (16-19 kph). Recreational: 13-16 mph (21-26 kph). Trained: 17-20 mph (27-32 kph). Strong amateur: 20-25 mph (32-40 kph). Pros: 25-30 mph (40-48 kph) sustained on flats.
Why is climbing speed so much slower?
You're doing more work per unit distance — overcoming gravity. A 5% grade can cut speed in half. Strava and similar apps separate climbing time from flat time for honest comparisons.
Average vs moving speed?
Average includes stops; moving speed only counts time the wheels were turning. Most cycling computers (Garmin, Wahoo) report both. Use moving speed for performance tracking.
