Running Pace Calculator
Calculate your running pace per mile or per kilometer from total time and distance. Or work backward — find finish time given a target pace.
What is Running Pace Calculator?
The running pace calculator works in three directions: pace from time and distance, finish time from pace and distance, or distance from pace and time. Plus mph/kph speed conversions.
Formula
Pace = total time / distance. To convert min/mile ↔ min/km: multiply by 0.6214 to go mi → km, or by 1.6093 km → mi.
Worked example
5 miles in 40 minutes: pace = 40 / 5 = 8:00 per mile (= 4:58 per km, 7.5 mph).
How to use this calculator
- Pick what to solve for.
- Fill the relevant inputs (distance, time, or target pace).
Frequently asked questions
What's a "good" running pace?
Personal — depends on training. Recreational easy run: 9-12 min/mile. Trained 5K race: 7-8 min/mile. Elite: under 5 min/mile. Track your own progress; comparison to others isn't useful.
Why mph and pace per mile?
Same info, different framing. Runners think in pace; gym treadmills show mph. Conversion: mph = 60 / pace_in_minutes.
Should I run all my miles at the same pace?
No. Most coaches recommend ~80% easy/aerobic and 20% harder workouts (intervals, tempos). All-fast running leads to injury and burnout.
