What is Swimming Pace Calculator?

The swimming pace calculator computes pace per 100 meters and per 100 yards — the two standard pacing units in swim training. Useful for triathletes converting between open water (meters) and U.S. lap pools (yards), and for lap swimmers tracking workout intensity.

Formula

Pace per 100m = total time / (total distance in m / 100). Same for yards. 1 meter = 1.0936 yards, so a 100m pace is ~9% slower than a 100yd pace at the same effort.

Worked example

1500m in 30:00: pace per 100m = 30:00 / 15 = 2:00 per 100m (= 1:50 per 100yd).

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter total distance and unit.
  2. Enter total time.

Frequently asked questions

What's a good swim pace?

Recreational lap swimmer: 2:00-2:30/100m. Triathlete: 1:30-2:00/100m. Competitive: under 1:30/100m. Olympic distance triathletes target around 1:30/100m for a 1500m swim.

Why use 100m as the unit?

Olympic pools are 50m, so 100m = two laps. Easy to track per-lap time. U.S. yard pools (25yd, 50yd) report per 100yd similarly.

Open water swims are slower — why?

No walls to push off, sighting required, currents and chop, wetsuit drag. Open water swims typically run 10-20 sec/100m slower than pool times for similar effort.
