What is Luggage Weight Estimator?

The luggage weight estimator compares your packed bag weight to airline limits and estimates the overweight bag fee. Most U.S. airlines limit checked bags to 50 lbs in economy.

Formula

Limit: 50 lbs (most U.S. airlines main cabin), 70 lbs (premium/international business). Overweight fees: $100 for 51–70 lbs, $200 for 71–100 lbs.

Worked example

48-lb bag, Delta main cabin: 2 lbs under limit. No fee.

55-lb bag, same flight: 5 lbs over → $100 overweight fee.

How to use this calculator

  1. Weigh your packed bag (luggage scale or bathroom scale).
  2. Pick the airline and cabin class.
  3. Check whether you're over and the fee.

Frequently asked questions

Can I redistribute weight between bags?

If you have multiple bags, yes — moving 5 lbs from a 55-lb bag to a 40-lb bag avoids a fee. Cheaper than paying overweight.

What about carry-ons?

U.S. domestic carriers don't weigh carry-ons but enforce size limits (22×14×9). Some international carriers strictly weigh carry-ons (typical limit 17–22 lbs).

What if I'm flying multiple legs on different airlines?

The most-restrictive airline's limit applies. Check both airlines' policies if your trip spans them.

Are overweight fees per leg or per trip?

Per direction. A round-trip overweight bag pays the fee twice (once outbound, once inbound). $200+ adds up fast — pack lighter.
